My latest creation...
Tonight's party at Mei on Taikang Road. Free flow Tiger beer from 10-11pm! Wicked.
Okay, so I'm not much of an artist. Experts will notice that really minor changes have been made to such a layout. Pure Platinum has remained the same, except for some minor details like all you can drink for 1 hour. The cool thing is, is that there's all you can drink at Fusion for 1 hour between 9pm-10pm tonight, and then 10pm-11pm at Mei. So why aren't you partying in Shanghai?
So I've tentatively booked a ticket home. I'm scheduled to leave August 15, 2003 for a return visit home. I'm planning to stay for 10 days or so, and I might fly to Las Vegas for business afterwards. It has almost been 2 years since I've been home, the same time I've started blogging on Xanga.
Kayoko asked me about Shanghai women. Whether it be my experience that this description of them is accurate.
In truth, many aspects are very real and true. China and many Chinese in general are a very superstitious people. Having said that, stereotypes are extremely common. Shanghainese women, are seen as very aggressive and manipulitive. Very much into wealth and into glamour. The Shanghainese men here are stereotyped as being submissive and very domesticated. If you ask any Chinese person, they will say that the women here don't know how to cook. The men do all the cooking and the cleaning at home, and this is accepted as fact here. The man makes the money, and the woman controls how it is spent.
There's your obvious good girl and bad girl here. Girls that go out and party, are generally seen as bad girls. They drink, they go out late, and they flirt with boys. Good girls stay at home, go to bed early and don't touch alcohol. Most Shanghai girls could outdrink a group of guys without getting drunk at any given day, any given time.
Many SH girls are promiscuous. I have known of several to cheat on their boyfriends, go through one night stands or short term lovefests. Most are looking for that one guy that will take care of them - in financial terms. And it's not necessarily girls just finding a rich guy now, they're looking for that guy that has potential. Girls here are much more strategic than that. One of my friends commenting on a dude that liked her:
"I know he really loves me but he's too dependent on his parents. He's a single child, so he's spoiled by his mom, dad and grandma. He is too comfortable with his surroundings. He won't work hard to be somebody, everything is handed to him."
And you know, even though guys who are from overseas are cool and all, many Shanghainese girls want to stay here. Many have gone to Canada, Hong Kong, USA and they have either come back, or told their friends here that the outside just ain't all that. So most girls who do want to go away, just want to go check it out. Their friends, family, home is right here in Shanghai.
It is an unsaid acceptance that married and wealthy men in China have at least one mistress. However, a friend of ours, the chief of police in one of the districts here in Shanghai says that there are many homicides in Shanghai because of this. Usually the wife finds out about it and kills the mistress (this stuff isn't reported, but apparently happens quite a bit).
Other random stereotypes: Chinese from Ningbo are great at doing business. Sichuan girls are the hottest in all of China. Shanghai girls are clever and manipulative. Northern Chinese men and women are generally taller and bigger. Cantonese people make the best soup.
Happy Birthday's to Eloise, Karen, Charles, Teresa, Madeline, Rob, Connie, Jessica, Tom and Tim!!!

hey simon.
i got a name ..so stop calling me kiddo. hehe
its a very thoughtful entry but i think it applies to all the women.
i will see you tonight.
so how long does it take you to throw together a creation like that anyways? they look pretty good to the untrained eye (me) haha... but i liked the one with kelly hu on it better
so you're finally going back home after two years... wow, you've been gone for that long already eh? btw, the thing about women being calculating and strategic don't only apply to women in shanghai... i know a lot of women over here who consider things like that too!
Good blog: I remember awhile ago in China, there was this homicide show that documented real women who were held responsible for killing either their husbands or mistresses. -Really portrayed Asian women as the cold, calculating type...( from my personal experience in Shanghai, I would have to agree)
And me, I'm from the Fujian Province. South-eastern coast of China. According to my relatives, it's too hot for SARS there. I am curious though, are you a business man in China, a student, are you fluent in CHinese?
WHY AREN'T I IN SHANGHAI? Men provide money and food, women spend it. Sounds ideal to me! haaha - SO kidding! The homicide part doesn't sound so cool...
Hey - lemme know if you make it out to Vegas - would love to join you!
simon
email me your email address. so i can send you pictures that we took on friday.
later
so what am i.....good or bad?? i cant tell the differesnce.
to be honest, ur poster is a little lame. kekee....but very eye catching.
u sound like u know every shanghai girl. how come girls i know here are not like what u said. they are very elegant and decent. they are both pretty in and outside.
what do u mean by"superstitious"???? just because we have longer history and more tradition, so we have more things to worship and respect?
it's so exaggerating that shanghai men do all the house work. they cook and do the laundry sometimes because they know how to love their wives. they dun want their lovely wives to have rough hands. women are made to be loved, not to serve!!!
