Sex, Drugs and Shanghai
In this city, I have seen, heard and been witness to things that I've never ever seen, heard and been witness to before. I thought that I was quite naive about things in life, but never before was I so off the mark. I'm much more naive than I thought I was.
The whoring and prostitute hunting doesn't stop at the old white businessmen that frequent the clubs like Park 97 or Guandii. I recently found out that even some of the people I admire most have a completely different conception of prostitution and cheating on loved ones... a different interpretation, I'd say.
The weed smoking, e-dropping and cocaine snorting isn't something that you just hear about from friends or from watching the news. These last couple of weeks have made me realize just how fast Shanghai can be. Hearing of friends getting beat up or people having a gun pointed to their heads, friends of friends being thrown into jail and friends of friends of friends being kidnapped are just a few of the crazy stories that I've been hearing about.
My mom brought me up very well, but my fear is that I will change. What ifs have been lingering in my mind. Accepting what I've been taught as immoral behaviour has crossed my mind. Maybe I'm just too damn conservative. Or maybe Shanghai can get a little fucked up sometimes.
I only wish these were urban myths.

Sometimes you have to decide for yourselves what you value and what you will accept of your own decorum and behaviour. No matter what you were taught, there are certain principles that I believe are part of our own destinct personalities. So make those judgements on your own. Hope you will choose the smarter path though. But then again, that's just my personality coming out again.

If you were brought up well then you have to trust your own judgement and believe that it will guide you in the right direction. That kind of stuff is all over the world, just most people don't hear about it.
Wow, I'm glad to be known more about Shanghai, which my mom still lives there. I'm surprised it gets changed so quickly since I moved here 5 years ago. Thank god I didn't go to visit there and even my mom. Because most of chinese people always put their noses up at me that I was used to grow up there and I'm sure now the time may seems getting worst and worst each day for being a bitchy hungry people looking for dirty money in flattering shanghai.
stay strong and true to what you believe in... don't let the messed up surroundings get to you. i'm sure your mom would be proud to know that she brought you up so well...
It doesn't surprise me at all. From what my friend (a dentist practicing in HK) told me, drugs and prostitution is rampant in not just shanghai, but even most medium-sized cities. With foreign investment money pouring in, and a large supply of people from poor villages with a hungry appetite for material belongings, all of that is simply inevitable. You'd think that the conservative Chinese traditions and beliefs would serve as the foundation of moral basis, but it simply is no match against human's desire for the superficialities. oh well.
Use your own judgement. Don't worry about what your mom will think...or anyone else. it's your life. You will have to live with the consequences of all your decisions...
