  • ASES

    My conference officially starts tomorrow.

    I'm mad busy.

    Hoping this week will end.

Working on four other projects.  Gracie, September isn't looking good now.

Nothing much else new.  Here's conference welcoming address:

    Welcome to ASES Shanghai!

    Dear ASES Delegates,

On behalf of those of us here in Shanghai, ASES welcomes you to ASES Shanghai 2002, ¡°Today¡¯s Entrepreneurs, Tomorrow¡¯s Future¡±.  As China¡¯s first fully student organized international conference, we are all very excited for this first ASES installment in China.  We¡¯ve come a long way from almost a year ago when everything was just an idea and a dream, but from our experiences throughout the year, we¡¯ve realized that dreams can happen!

As one of the fastest growing countries in the world, China is experiencing a lot of change.  Misconceptions of China can only be washed away from experiencing yourself and seeing for yourself how much China has grown in the past couple of years.  Shanghai, an increasingly common destination for investment and wealth, is also home to a plethora of entrepreneurs from all over the world.  All this combined makes ASES this year that much more of an exciting event.  Everything from winning the Olympic bid for 2008, the recent hosting of its APEC summit and China¡¯s entry into the WTO is pointing towards a China poised to be a major player in all fronts.  Designed to give you a snapshot of what¡¯s currently happening in China, ASES Shanghai 2002 hopes to give you a greater appreciation of the changes going on in China right now, and perhaps inspire you to come here with your entrepreneurial efforts.

Surrounding you will be students from Canada, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Philippines, Singapore and the United States of America.  As our organization continues to grow, I¡¯m certain the list of countries will continue to strengthen.  Having said that, over the next week, you¡¯ll have the chance to meet and become good friends with people from various parts of the world ¨C each one, like yourself, an entrepreneur in their own way.  From my own experiences with ASES, one of the most important things you¡¯ll take away from this weeklong summit is the friendships you will have made.  So don¡¯t be afraid to say hello, or to lend a hand, we are all friends here.  Most of all, keep the dream alive.

Welcome to ASES 2002 in Shanghai.

    Best Regards,

Ladies and Gentlemen, the wonderful Diana Krall...

  • Why Aren't You Here?

The hustle and bustle of SH is constantly hammered into my head.  Traffic is a bitch, with bikes and cars and buses all scrounging for space on the roads in the city everyone looking to get somewhere as fast as something can take them.  Skyscrapers adorn the skies and Starbucks and McDonalds hug every major area of the city.  People who have been here for five years or more recount how much the city has grown since they've gotten here, yet I marvel at the rate of change in the city from what I've seen in just the one year I've been here.

But it seems this is only just the beginning.  Within the next 5 - 10 years, they are building 8 new subway lines.  It really puts into perspective that 10 year project to build the Sheppard line from Don Mills to Yonge.  They're also building a Disneyworld, and Universal wants to build a theme park here as well.  The government has also embarked on the building of a Formula One racetrack set to be up by 2008.  The city is in the process of bidding for Expo 2010.  They're building an electro-magnetic speed train from the Airport to the centre of the city - a train that will turn a 40 minute ride into an 8 minute one.  David Copperfield was in town a couple weeks ago.  So was Les Miserables.  And Jay Chou, Kelly Chen, Andy Hui and bunch of other stars are putting together a superconcert next week (yes I think I'm going).  And sweet Diana Krall was here (pics to be posted very soon).  All this is going on and much much more... which raises the question, why aren't you here?

    Come party with me.
