  • La Dee Da...

There's always so much I want to write about here.  I'm going to cover these topics someday when I have time...

    - Like the little fat and spoilt Shanghainese kids
    - Choosing door number 1 today and then 2 tomorrow and other toilet adventures
    - My best friend's ride
    - Chicks to passports like white to rice
    - Reverse racism in China
    - Gays in Shanghai
    - Bullshyte games to play when teaching oral English, and how to think of them 5 mins before class
    - Swearing, Big Brother, and the Internet
    - Little habits I've developed in SH

But today, I'm going to tell you about how much I'm going to miss my students when I'm done teaching.  Wednesday is my last class, and yesterday I took my students on a "class trip" to Xin Tian Di and then went to Holiday to Karaoke afterwards.

Xin Tian Di was hella expensive for them, I kinda felt sorry for them.  It's kinda like a Yorkville area and bringing a bunch of po' ass kids into it.  They were overwhelmed.  Many of them have been in Shanghai for several years, if not all their lives and have not been to Xin Tian Di.  We went to a bar called Star East and they marvelled at all the pictures of Kelly Chen and other HK/Taiwan singers and actors/actresses.  There were 20 of us, and we all sat upstairs.  Drinks were about 50RMB each.  They are used to 4RMB meals!  I could hear them calculating how many meals they were going to have to sacrifice if they were to buy a drink.  I would have bought them all drinks if I had the ability to, but that won't be the case for a while.  I told them to not worry if they couldn't order, and the biatch waitress looked so annoyed when 20 people walked in and less than half of them ordered something.  I spoke to her in English when she demanded everyone order a drink so she couldn't respond.  I think speaking English here to waitresses at these posh places make them feel inferior.  For the sake of my students, I hope she felt like shyte.

After Star East, 14 of us went to Holiday KTV for some karaoke action.  I've only been karaoke about 3 times here in SH and am quite ashamed that I still haven't learnt a Chinese song yet... I promise when I come back I'll have a repetoire though... 1 a month.  That's my goal.  My students were mostly great singers and clapped when I sang my English songs.  How come you guys don't clap when I sing?  haha...  I sang Yesterday, In Love With You (that's kind of a Chinese song!) and When You Say Nothing at All.  We only payed 30RMB each and then went home afterwards.  I had fun with these local cats, it felt weird hanging out with them at first but it was tres cool.  I can understand how difficult it must be being a teacher... getting to know your students, becoming friends with them and then having to say goodbye shortly after.  Over and over again?  I don't think I could do it.

I met some more people on Saturday.  A local girl that Nick picked up at Rojam had a birthday and I went with him.  One of her friends there, Rebecca was eyeing me right from the beginning.  She circled like a vulture first watching from afar, then getting closer until she sat beside me a while later.  We also went to Holiday afterwards to sing and we talked quite a bit.  She wants me to teach her English in exchange for Shanghainese.  White to rice I tell you, but hey, she's cute.
